The Traitor King

You know how they refer to healing as "whack-a-mole?"

It's got NOTHING on trying to Shiv a single red bug in a tangle of 30-40 other bugs to de-enrage it, with all the name plates moving around and every click falling on some other, un-enraged bug that just got in the way. >_>

How we did it:

(10-man, btw)

The Bug Group:
  • Paladin tank (prot spec) in nature resist gear, standing on a thick pile of frost at the south end of the room, taunting and healing herself like crazy with righteous fury active. More details for the pally at the bottom of the post.
  • Two healers spamming on her; if they have no threat dump, I suggest trying to stay out of the way so the tank can see when they have bug aggro. We also suggest priest and paladin for these roles due to fade (threat dump) and low threat.
  • Rogue amidst the chaos using shiv to apply anesthetic poison to enraged bugs, and trying not to die or get too many stacks of bugbites (acid-drenched mandibles). More on that below.

Everyone else:
  • Stick in the north end of the room as much as possible during bug-spawns (kite phase).
  • The rest of the raid deal with killing burrowers (one tank picking them up), tanking Anub (another tank), one healer keeping an eye on all of them, and dropping more frost patches.
  • Anub-kites must be taken to frost patches AWAY from the paladin tank; reserve those frost patches for when the bug group gets their own anub-marks.
  • All bug aggro must be kited through frost patches to the pally tank; with most of the raid at the north end, the bug spawns typically came to the south-end group anyway.
  • Keep 4 or more frost patches dropped on the bug group, as they will get used up as Anub tries to persue anyone of the bug group. Drop these during the normal phase when Anub is up and not burrowing underground, as little bugs do not spawn in this phase.

ROGUE:

If you're the rogue, I seriously suggest turning off nameplates. It's easier to target the big red adds without having to sift through a zillion nameplates.

  • Anesthetic Poison on Offhand
  • Crippling Poison on Mainhand (helps slow some that try to escape)
  • Use Shiv to apply anesthetic to any giant red bugs beating up your pally tank, but prioritize any big red bugs that are escaping her to beat on someone else. The tank can handle a few enraged beating on her for a bit, better than a dps or healer can.
  • Avoid using Fan of Knives to apply the poisons; the poison proc is not guaranteed, and the fan will do a lot of damage to adds you want to keep alive for nearly 4 full submerge phases.
  • Use CoS to drop stacks of bugbites when they get above 7 or so; you may only get two uses of it in the course of the fight so choose well when you decide to use it.
  • Use Vanish midway through the 3rd submerge to dump the aggro you've been building, or all the bugs will eat you.
  • ToT is unreliable here. Don't attempt to use it to put a loose add on the tank; a taunt is needed.

PALADIN:

A prot pally works best as the bug tank for this achievement due to their unique mix of plate (better NR gear available), tanking, and healing with righteous fury.

Gear list:
From our Pally-tank:

"I used old gear with the most defense I could find to give me 525 Defense to be un-critable to those level 80 mobs. (Note 540 is for level 83 boss mobs)

I re-gemmed and enchanted whatever old gear I used (Shield/Shoulder/Hands/Cloak) to add more +Def or in the case of the hands a nature resist kit.

With all of that and a nature resist totem or Aura I was at 430 Resist. 20 Over what is required so you can skip the two nature kits, HOWEVER ... I kept them because a 30 yard Aura might go out of range from a hunter, OR a totem might fall off during a kite.
The hunter's aura for us was NOT up 100% of the time when he was kiting, so this was helpful for us. 20 extra resist is better then none, as by the end your add tank is taking a tonne of damage in spikes.

I used Consecration rank 2 to try to help keep adds on me without killing them. I also healed when both of my taunts were on cool down to get healing threat."

On a semi-related note, during the course of farming for resist gear we used on the bug-tank:

Feral Cat vs Mutilate Rogue

Patch 3.3

After mostly healing on my druid through pug-5s, I was given the opportunity last night to dps in cat form through a couple of the ICC instances. Most recently, all of my dps play has been on my rogue, and I was shocked at myself for needing to consciously break my rogue habits in order to get back into the "groove" of cat dps.

I literally had to tell myself, "stop playing like a rogue."

(note: table looks nicer on the blog itself than through a reader. Go CSS.)

Is one better than the other? No, not really. Both have their ups and downs, and both can do similar amounts of damage... in fact, they buff each other and synergize well together. However: they do have a different playstyle from each other, currently. With a ruptureless cycle on my rogue, though, I must admit that playing her feels a lot simpler than playing my feral druid!

I enjoy both. I like the free and "easy" mutilate/envenom, with her vanish and ToT; I like the feral DoTs and weaving them together, with bear form to help a tank handle an unexpected circumstance. I just need to remember that they do play differently from each other... and to stop using SR at 1-2 CP when it's just going to run out in 10 seconds, because no, Rip and Shred won't refresh it :D

Acronyms/Abilities:

SnD: Slice and Dice, attack speed buff, refreshes on each Envenom/Eviscerate
HfB: Hunger for Blood, 10% damage buff
ToT/TotT: Tricks of the Trade, a misdirect
FoK: Fan of Knives
Mutilate: CP-generating attack boosted by poison on target
Envenom: finisher attack boosted by Deadly Poison on target; buffs poison applications for a short time
Garrote: bleed opener from stealth
Rupture: bleed finisher; I personally run a ruptureless rotation atm.
Kick: interrupt, requires no cp
Gouge: incapacitate, requires no cp

FF: Faerie Fire, -armor debuff
SR: Savage Roar, 30% damage buff
FB: Ferocious Bite, high-damage finisher
Mangle: attack with debuff that boosts bleed and shred damage
Shred: CP-generating attack, requires being behind the target
Rake: CP-generating bleed DoT
Rip: bleed finisher
Feral Charge: Bear-form provides a short root/interrupt; cat provides a daze
Maim: incapacitate effect that requires CP

A Pugger Rogue Alt's Mutilate Rotation

Patch 3.3

Disclaimer: I don't really do rogue theorycraft. My rogue is not my main. I do, however, like to do semi-decent damage when I play my alt, and have spent some time at the dummies, reading a few guides, and in 5-mans seeing what results in the most DPS.

  1. Open with Garrote. Or maybe just Mutilate. Depends on how fast your tank is pulling; stealth is slow.
  2. Slice N Dice.
  3. HfB if Bleeding. Rupture if not Bleeding, then HfB.
  4. Mutilate.
  5. Envenom.
  6. Mutilate.
  7. Envenom.
  8. Mutilate.
  9. Envenom.
  10. It's not dead yet? Return to step 4.

  • Use Tricks of the Trade whenever it's up; toss it on the tank when entering combat, especially in a PuG. Use it whenever aggro is looking... scary. Your healer will love you for it, and you can freak out the tank by entering combat ahead of him and attacking mobs he hasn't touched, which is good for an evil little roguely giggle. Kae, evil? Nahhhh.
  • Use kick, gouge, kidney shot, and/or arcane torrent to interrupt anything that they cast.
  • Use Feint to lower damage you take from AoE.
  • Use Cloak of Shadows to become temporarily immune to spell effects.
  • Use Vanish if you pull aggro around ToT.
  • Use Evasion if vanish is down; grats, you're a tank.
  • Use Fan of Knives if there are 3-4+ targets. If you feel like it. In a pug, aggro is not guaranteed, so make sure you hit ToT first.
  • Make the warrior or combat rogue sunder; Expose Armor hurts your dps rotation and requires you to actually build Combo Points to use. ;) If it's a boss and neither are available... may as well hit an expose armor early, once your SnD is established. If you remember.
  • Love your dps warriors/feral druids/combat rogues/hunter pets that cast bleeds. They take the Rupture out of your HfB juggle!

I think assassination spec is in for a nerf. My rogue feels OP right now : / I run with Deadly Poison on offhand (which is needed for mut/envenom, and stacks to 5) and Instant Poison on mainhand (insta-damage). The patch introduced a "small" poison change: when I have a full 5-stack of deadly poison on my target (which is pretty much always), it'll proc my instant poison instead when it tries to add to my deadly poison stack, effectively giving me a free insta-poison hit where previously I had no effect. I'm doing huge amounts of damage, all while wearing a blue offhand dagger (due to the 1.3 attack speed). It's frightening.

You go, little rogue alt.

Granted, they did swing out the nerf bat late last week with reducing HfB to a 10% damage increase, down from 15%. The tooltip (last I checked) still says 15%, and I still feel like I'm doing far more damage than I should for my gear level, but hey, it's made my alt fun to play recently :)

(any raiding mutilate-rogue mains that wish to give tips/pointers, of course, are welcome)

Rogue Power Auras

My little rogue-lady has a few Power Auras of her own. For those non-druids who like to sneak about and shred/smack/otherwise harm things, I will share my settings for her :)

5 CP

This is the same alert I use for my feral druids: do I have 5 combo points? If so, this exclaimation pops up. The bars and buttons are not a part of Power Auras.

55 Energy

This is a little yellow glow that I placed on my energy bar (those bars are my IceHUD) that signifies I'm at 55 energy: thus, I can cast mutilate. It helps with my pacing.

Bleed Effects on the Target

This is an alert that the target has a bleed effect on them, thus you can use Hunger for Blood while targeting them. As "Bleed" is not a debuff type recognized like poisons or curses are, I had to add the Bleed effects individually to the debuff list for this aura. The list is as comprehensive as I know of; if there are more bleeds to add, please let me know!

Slice n' Dice

I don't typically use Power Auras for this, preferring instead to use my IceHUD timer on my HUD (which has a moving bar counting down until it wears off, and shows what it will refresh to before I even hit SnD). But, I will throw it up here as a quick start for any who may need it :)
